Holacracy and Human Ego
Holacracy trainings often use the word "ego", yet what is that language construct really pointing to, and how we can use it to better understand and implement Holacracy's deeper effects and potentials? This topic will explore how Holacracy works with "ego", as the word is used in ego-development theory: the "ego" as both the locus of identity (self-sense), and the central processing unit of meaning-making (the storyteller; i.e. the process by which we make sense of or tell ourselves stories about our experiences and our world). In contrast to the more common usage of the term which is negative-by-definition, this distinction is much more nuanced and can be a challenge to see and work with, yet it also offers a powerful distinction to use in the context of Holacacy. This topic will dive into this distinction further, to highlight how Holacracy steps outside the ground of human meaning-making to harness the ego's immense potential as a tool for evolution, while avoiding the limits of its frequent attachments and resistances.
Past Calls
| Dialog w/ Susanne Cook-Greuter: Ego, Ego Development, & Holacracy (Feb 3rd, 2011) This dialog between HolacracyOne's Brian Robertson and internationally-respected leader in adult development Dr. Susanne Cook-Greuter will explore a nuanced understanding of the human meaning-making impulse ("ego"), as well as developmental trends seen when studying patterns of human meaning-making. Then they'll apply this lens to Holacracy, to explore how its structures can help something emerge from a ground beyond the human meaning-making process. more | |
| Dialog w/ Terri O'Fallon: Ego, Ego Development, & Holacracy (Mar 2nd, 2011) This dialog between HolacracyOne's Brian Robertson and Pacific Integral's Terri O'Fallon will continue exploring the human meaning-making process and Holacracy's unique way of holding it. We'll invite Terri to share highlights of her latest research and thinking around development and different "floors" of ego, as presented in her award-winning paper from the 2010 Integral Theory Conference, and then we'll use those lenses to further examine Holacracy's potential impact. more | |
| Holacracy, Polarities, & Human Maturity (w/ Beena Sharma) (Mar 10th, 2011) This dialog between HolacracyOne's Brian Robertson and Certified Holacracy Practitioner Beena Sharma will explore the philosophies, principles, and structures within Holacracy that relate to or support human maturity, including how polarities are expressed and managed both within and by the Holacracy operating system. more | |
| Letting Go of Heroic Leadership (Mar 23rd, 2011) This call will explore the journey of relaxing our attachments to heroic leadership into a system where leadership is distributed and the heroic leader becomes obsolete. For once-heroic leaders, this can expose some very deep attachments and challenge the core of our self-identity. Join us for both discussion of the topic as well as first-hand personal stories of this transition - and of finding new footing on the other side. more | |
| Holacracy, Polarities, & Human Maturity (Part 2) (Apr 12th, 2011) Beena Sharma will join us again on this 90-minute call, to continue the discussion of Holacracy, polarities, and human maturity. This time, we'll walk through many of the developmental stages described in the ego development model. For each stage, we'll start by briefly orienting around the essence and key capacities of the stage, then explore specific polarities that are often relevant from that stage, and finally look at how Holacracy may impact those key polarities and the individuals wrestling with them. more | |
| The Mirror of IDM (Apr 28th, 2011) This call will explore the rules and nuances built into Holacracy's "Integrative Decision-Making" process ("IDM") in depth, and look at how they "hold up a mirror" to human meaning-making and attachments in real-time - and, facilitated well, how they help those attachments naturally release in the face of the brutally exquisite reflection of raw reality. more |
